A gritty crime Brit flick with Jason Statham as Tom Brant, a violent hard ass detective on the trail of a serial killer called Weiss who is obsessed with bumping off 8 cops after a news reporter unwittingly chooses the number that will die. Teaming up with his boss, a new Inspector drafted in to catch the murderer, the two set out to nail Weiss before the killer reaches his target.
No surprises to see Jason Statham playing pretty much every other role he’s cast for but it’s a role he does exceedingly well. Unlike Crank or The Transporter movies, there are no carefully choreographed (and absurd) fight scenes or tongue-in-cheek humour. The murders are brutal and savage with Aidan Gillen particularly effective as a nasty and sadistic killer whilst themes of drug dealing and abuse are briefly explored.
The film is based on a novel of the same name which I haven’t read so I’ve no idea how good this adaptation is but the movie is solid and Statham is always watchable.
