Now this is a pleasant surprise. A mindless 80’s style blockbuster packed with the kind of homage’s to 80’s style action movies that I grew up watching with a wholly unoriginal script that is pretty much a copy of other copies that have ripped off the old "overthrow nasty Dictator somewhere in Latin America" routine.
Featuring an all star cast, Stallone (who also wrote and directed the movie) leads a group of super elite mercenaries tasked with overthrowing a nasty Dictator somewhere in Latin America. That’s all you need to know and you’ve no doubt already guessed the rest.

What makes this movie terrific fun is the cast and it’s testament to Stallone’s star power that he managed to bag all the names. We have Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Jason Statham and glorious cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger complete with banter, in jokes and sly references. In fact, the three minute scene between Stallone, Willis and Schwarzenegger is worth the price of the movie alone and just makes you realise how great those corny 80’s style films were.
Never taking itself seriously, Stallone knows exactly what the audience expects and delivers in spades. A sequel is supposedly in the making with even more stars pencilled in. Can’t wait to see it.
